The 300-year-old village of Lai Chi Wo was once one of the most affluent hamlets in the northeastern New Territories. Mostly made up of Hakka people, it also has one of the oldest surviving feng shui woodlands in Hong Kong. The village features a God of War temple and a mangrove habitat with ancient vegetation, including huge interlocking-branch trees, hollow trees and ‘five-finger’ camphor trees.

During low tide, the water depth around Lai Chi Wo pier is too shallow for larger vessels to berth. Furthermore, the pier is narrow, aged and primitive leading to potential safety concerns to passengers embarking/ disembarking the vessels. During holidays or weekends, the limited berthing space and narrow passageway cannot cope with the high utilisation rate. In order to improve the pier structure, boarding condition and other facilities, knowing that the improvement works shall avoid impacts on the water quality and environment in Yan Chau Tong Marine Park, we will consult the relevant stakeholders to collect views to develop the most appropriate preliminary design.
